Free Soul School
Music & Art Foundation
Our Story
Bio
The Free Soul School was founded in 2013 in the artist village Ruigoord, on the west harbour of Amsterdam. Initially as a community project for the youth there to learn more about various artistic practices, through the organisation of workshops.
There the first music workshop was manifested, and the overwhelming support of the project quickly gave rise to a new found unity in the Village.
Word spread and soon guests from all over the world was attending the workshops.
In 2014 the Free Soul School visited Switzerland, where the Rosmatt family home, in the beautiful hills of Jura became the new location for more workshops.
Again the project attracted guests from all over the world, and the community surrounding them grew even bigger.
Later in 2014 Free Soul School visited Copenhagen, Denmark, where the Hobbit House became the new location for more workshops.
Here the Danish family gathered, under the gentle guidance of Daniel Sedona, in a new more private setting of the workshops. The new format, as oppose to the Ruigoord model, with public events and invitation, now gave rise to a smaller more specific invitational based format of workshops, where the music genre and guest list was more predefined.
hereby the first steps towards the creation of a more defined, music foundation was born.
This also gave rise to the creation of a Free Soul School Live band, Sequoia Tribe, and the focus of the music workshops, now also encapsulated live performance.
In 2014, 2015, 2016 Free Soul School workshops also visited other communities in Denmark, The Netherlands, Spain, and the live band did performances on several festivals.
The Free Soul School then entered a period of contemplation, and the team behind it took a time out to consider what to make of all the experiences, and how to achieve a more professional and sustainable organisational structure going forward.
in 2021 the Free Soul School then visited the Ginsborg art foundation in north of Sjælland, Denmark where the support and experience necessary to make these changes was found.
The Free Soul School live band was reborn, and the music workshops revived, and the new vision of the organisation formed.
Thus the Free Soul School Music and Art Foundation was born.
Our Mission
Our mission is to bring music production, live performance and community interaction to the next level.
To make workshops where everyone is teacher and student simultaneously, where the more experienced guide the less experienced.
This could be regarding techniques such as musical instrument handling, musical theory, tonality, composition, lyrics, production techniques, microphone handling etc. But also creatively, being free and spontaneous, recording in alternative ways, or from natural sound sources, such as a stream, cows, birds, or water etc.
A drum solo with sticks on a table, bottles, or maybe a creaking chair etc.
The overall goal is to make music production fun and the recording equipment, studio environment and technology familiar and not intimidating.

Our mission is also to bring cultural self-awareness and appreciation of musical and cultural differences, to musicians and audiences. So we can relearn who we are, where we come from, and where we want to go. This done through community support and further development of our workshop concept, so that we can help bring indigenous cultures to the forefront, and show their beauty and uniqueness. Also done through musical genre fusion, to unite and bring cultures together. To fuse the ancient with the modern, the foreign with the local and so on.

Our mission is also to bring music into a new light with immersive sound journeys.
Where live music performance, atmospherical soundscapes, quadrophonic modulation, bass floor panels, brings the audience a new experience.

Visions for the future
Our main vision for the future of the Free Soul School, is to create our own Free Soul Festival, where we can bring all the artists from the various projects and workshops together, and make a unified festival experience for the public.
A true co-creative festival, where the whole Free Soul School community can come together, and all the Free Soul School creations can reach an larger audience.

We also envision making music retreats, centred around the Free Soul School music workshops, where artists can come to find inspiration, share creations, and find healing in a ceremonial space. Here by further developing the workshop concept by including guest teachers, both in spiritual and musical practises.

We also envision making international travels as a Free Soul School team, to support various indigenous communities. Making knowledge exchanges through various workshops, with video and photography documentation .

To achieve these visions we want to be self reliant, having all necessary equipment and crew available, so we can be free to push the project internationally, without needing anything more than a location to put up our event.
